OpenAI is currently dealing with a significant outage impacting both ChatGPT and key parts of its API infrastructure. As of the latest update, the disruption has been ongoing for more than half an hour, affecting developers, enterprise users, and anyone relying on file uploads inside ChatGPT conversations.
Batch API Jobs Stuck in Finalization
One of the main issues involves Batch API jobs, which are getting stuck during the finalization stage. Out of the twelve API components OpenAI monitors for uptime, the Batch API is showing degraded performance.
According to OpenAI’s official status message:
“Subset of Batch API jobs stuck in finalizing state.”
The problem began at 3:54 PM, and many developers are unable to complete or retrieve results from their Batch jobs – a critical workflow for those running large-scale or automated operations.
ChatGPT File Upload Failures
The outage is also affecting file uploads in ChatGPT conversations, preventing users from attaching documents, images, and other files. OpenAI reports this as a partial outage, but many users are encountering the same error:
“File uploads to ChatGPT conversations are failing for some users, giving an error message indicating the file has expired.”
This issue began at 3:53 PM, nearly the same time as the Batch API failure, indicating a broader system disruption.
Impact
- Developers relying on Batch API processing are currently unable to finalize jobs.
- Users who depend on file uploads inside ChatGPT, for tasks such as document analysis, image interpretation, or project collaboration, are unable to proceed.
- The outage affects both ChatGPT’s web app and API-based workflows, suggesting a deeper infrastructure malfunction.
OpenAI has acknowledged both issues on its status page and is actively investigating.
